‘s-Hertogenbosch, or Den Bosch, means ‘the Duke’s Forest,’ is a city in the South of the Netherlands. The town was founded by Henry I of Brabant, on some forested dunes in the middle of a marsh sometime around 1185. From its first days, he conceived the city as a fortress, but the Duke also liked to hunt in the surrounding forests. Much of the historical center of the city remains intact, with many old buildings, fortifications, churches and statues. 's-Hertogenbosch has the oldest remaining brick house in the Netherlands, 'de Moriaan', which was built at the beginning of the 13th century. It is also famous as the birth grounds and inspiration of very famous painters: Hieronymus Bosch, one of the greatest painters of the northern Renaissance, lived on the market square during the middle ages, while Vincent van Gogh was born in a neighboring village.
