As the train moved forward to the south from Ljubljana, the capital of Slovenia, to the Postojna Cave Park, there was a subtle undertone to the atmosphere. It was rainy and sparsely populated outside. The old train moved through verdant mountains, making the only sound there. The view ahead was blurred by the trees and the mountain mist, but my destination, Postojna, was made clearer by this — with its underground world and eyeless juvenile dragons, it seems that Postojna should exist in such a remote and inaccessible place.

Copious amounts of beer, sausages and rollercoasters. It may not sound like these three elements should easily go together but every year in Munich they combine magically to create Oktoberfest, the world’s biggest folk festival. But beware, Oktoberfest mainly takes place in September! In 2019, it runs in Germany’s third city from September 21 to October 6 on a vast festival ground filled with enormous beer tents and scary rides to the southwest of the centre.

Massive staircases, vaulted passages and magnificent terraces all bear witness to the former status of Hôtel-Dieu, which now is the palatial Intercontinental Marseille hotel. The perfectly preserved facade, marble floors and wrought iron banisters transport visitors to a more aristocratic time, while the sleek interior is all modern design touches.
